Urinary Incontinence
Brenda L. Kehoe, M.D.
Urinary incontinence falls into two main
categories, genuine stress incontinence, and
urge incontinence.
Because their mechanism of action differs,
their treatment differs as well.
Generally, for simple urinary incontinence
that requires a daily pad for protection,,
interferes with activities of daily living such as
sexual relations or exercise, or has become
intolerable, surgical options are available.
To maintain dyness, a surgical solution may be considered.  Most of today's surgical
options involve a sling procedure that supports the bladder neck.  This may involve
placement of mesh to suspend the urethra.  The Tension -free vaginal tape or
transobturator tape procedures can usually be done in one day as an outpatient.
